What Sets MJ Kloss Apart
Preparing
A solid base is where good plastering begins. We take away any loose material and put on the correct primer or bonding, so the new plaster adheres well and doesn't shift.
Craftsmanship
Because MJ Kloss started out in decorating, our plasterers hold themselves to a decorator's finish. Prior to being signed off, each wall and ceiling must be even, smooth and free from any ridges.
The Finish
As soon as the plaster is dry, our in-house decorators can put on the mist coat and paint the room, so you will not be left waiting for a separate contractor.
How We Can Help
Skim coating
Applying a new skim coat revives walls that are uneven, cracked, or worn. Our plasterers lay down a sleek final layer over solid plaster or plasterboard, leaving it prepared for decorating once dry.
Re-plastering
Where plaster has detached or begun to disintegrate, we remove it down to the brickwork and apply fresh plaster completely, creating a reliable foundation that lasts for years ahead.
Ceiling work
Drooping, fissured and moisture-affected ceilings often appear in older London properties. We substitute them with new plasterboard, apply a smooth skim and can add new coving to complete the job.
Repairs and making good
Leaks, new wiring or building work often leave walls with patches and pits. Our team repairs them, merging each fix with the surface around it until it is hidden beneath paint.
Plastering for schools and commercial premises
MJ Kloss plans plastering work in offices, shops and schools around your opening hours or during the school holidays, so disruption is kept to a minimum.
Skimming, Re-plastering or Fitting Plasterboard?
This short guide shows which method fits each problem:
- Skim coat – the right choice when the plaster below stays firm yet the surface is rough, cracked or uneven
- Re-plastering – the right choice when plaster is hollow-sounding, detaching or breaking down
- Plasterboard and dry lining – the right choice for damaged ceilings, new partitions and walls needing a quick, level finish
- Patch repair – the right choice for single cracks, holes and damage
- Skimming over Artex – the right choice for old textured ceilings to produce a smooth finish without affecting the layer beneath
Uncertain about what is required? An estimator from our team can inspect your ceilings and walls to advise on the most suitable method.

Questions We Get Asked Most
Before decorating, how much time does fresh plaster need to dry?
This depends on the plaster’s thickness, the time of year and the room’s ventilation. A skim layer typically requires a few days to a week, whereas deeper re-plastering may take longer. Being decorators, we know precisely when the plaster is ready, and if our crew is also decorating the room, we will put on the first mist coat at the correct moment.
How do skimming and re-plastering differ?
With skimming, a thin final coat goes over plaster that remains sound to create a fresh, smooth surface. Re-plastering involves taking loose or damaged plaster off down to the brickwork, then rebuilding the wall with new backing and finishing coats. Our estimator will advise which option your walls require.
Is it possible to plaster on top of Artex?
Indeed. Applying a skim coat over Artex or a similar textured finish produces a sleek, contemporary ceiling. Textured coatings installed prior to 2000 may contain asbestos, which is why we refrain from sanding or scraping them and will suggest testing should the coating require disturbance.
How much mess does plastering create?
There will inevitably be some dust, though our plasterers minimise it. We cover floors and furniture, can screen off doorways, and clean the work area at the close of each day.
Can you fix a ceiling that has been damaged by a leak?
Yes. After the leak is resolved and the area has dried completely, we can remove the affected portion and fit new plasterboard, or replace the entire ceiling if required, before applying a smooth skim ready for decorating.
