What Sets MJ Kloss Apart
Getting ready
Before starting any refurbishment, we organise every detail so that each trade steps in right after the previous one without causing hold-ups.
Quality of Work
The work is done by plasterers, carpenters, joiners, tilers and plumbers we employ directly, with a quality control supervisor on site keeping watch over it.
Final Presentation
Our decorators finish every refurbishment, so the property is returned to you clean, finished and ready to use.
How We Can Help You
Residential renovation and refurbishment
From individual rooms to entire flats and houses, we carry out refurbishments one room at a time when necessary, allowing you to remain at home.
Refurbishment of rental properties
Between tenancies, our team quickly updates rental properties, renewing kitchens, bathrooms, floors and décor to minimise the time they stand empty.
Commercial and office refurbishment
Offices, shops, restaurants and shared spaces are all refurbished by MJ Kloss, and when necessary we work outside normal hours so your business can keep operating.
School refurbishment
Over the holidays, our team renovates classrooms, hallways, toilets and staff rooms to ensure everything is ready for the start of the new term.
Period property refurbishment
Homes from the Victorian and Edwardian eras call for a sympathetic touch. We restore the original features, recreate period mouldings to match and pick finishes in keeping with the property's character.
Preparing for Your Refurbishment
A refurbishment stays on track with good planning. Here are the key points to consider:
- Priorities – work out which rooms and tasks are most important to you, particularly if you have a budget to stick to
- Order of work – the messy tasks are done first: strip-out and plastering, followed by joinery, tiling and fitting, and decorating at the end
- Specialist trades – arrange electrical and heating work in good time so it slots into our schedule
- Living arrangements – choose whether to remain in the property or move out while some of the work is done
- Timing – periods between tenancies and school holidays make perfect windows
During their visit, our estimator can assist you with working through each of these areas.

Our Frequently Asked Questions
Can we continue living in the property while the refurbishment takes place?
In many cases, yes. By tackling one room at a time, we can make it possible for you to carry on living at home, though on bigger projects you may find it simpler to move out for some of the work. Before anything begins, we'll go through the choices with you.
What is the expected duration of the refurbishment?
The timescale depends on how large the property is and what work is needed. We'll give you a clear timeframe in your quotation and update you on progress all the way through.
Are you able to modernise a property used for renting in the gap between lets?
Yes. Because vacant periods mean lost income for landlords, we schedule rental refurbishments for the quickest possible completion so the next tenants can move in.
Is it possible to remove or reposition walls?
We put up and take down non-load-bearing stud walls. Taking out a supporting wall requires calculations from a structural engineer and sign-off from building control, so that falls outside what we do.
Do you also decorate the exterior of the property?
Yes. We have carried out exterior painting as part of our services since 1975, which means we can renew walls, windows, doors and woodwork on the outside during your refurbishment.
